The Walking City

Halley Base V, a research base 1,400 kilometres from the South Pole on the 150-metre thick floating Bruntice Ice Shelf, was built on extendable stilts. But after 20 years, they were encased in 75 feet of ice. Hugh Broughton Architects solved the problem by building an Archigram-like walking city. The Halley VI Antarctic Research Station, opened this February, is on hydraulically elevated modules which respond to annually rising snow levels. If the site calves off as an iceberg, the base relocates.
