The government of the Northwest Territories has made its case to the federal government for more infrastructure investment in the wake of growing transportation and energy needs.

Government officials made remarks to the Standing Committee of Transportation, Infrastructure and Communities, educating the committee on the infrastructure challenges facing the north.

GNWT currently has plans for three new significant transportation projects to help improve all-weather road access throughout, which currently only exist for 12 of the 33 communities in NWT. The projects, the Mackenzie Valley Highway, Tlicho all-season road, and Slave Geological Province Access Corridor, all require government funding in order to move ahead with construction.

Another are of concern is energy infrastructure, with only eight of NWT’s 33 communities currently having access to hydroelectric power.

The challenge is providing funding for these projects when they ultimately impact so few people. Northwest Territories currently has approximately 44,000 residents according to the presentation made to the committee. Of those 44,000 almost half, 21,000, reside in the capital city of Yellowknife. Twenty-seven of the other 32 communities have populations less than 1,000 people.
